HOW TO PEEL OR SCRAPE HDPE PIPE FOR ELECTROFUSION WELDING

Peeling or scraping HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) pipe is an essential step in preparing for electrofusion welding. This process removes the oxidized layer and any surface contaminants to ensure a proper and secure weld. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly peel/scrape HDPE pipe for electrofusion welding:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  1. Rotary pipe peeler / scraper specifically designed for HDPE pipes
  2. 90% Lint free alcohol wipes
  3. Marking pen
  4. Measuring tape
  5. Personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses)

STEPS

Safety First:
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and safety glasses.

Measure and Mark:
Measure the area of the pipe that will be inserted into the electrofusion fitting.
Mark the length on the pipe with a marking pen. This will be your guide for how much of the pipe needs to be scraped.

Clean the Pipe Surface:
Wipe down the area to be scraped with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any dirt, grease, or other contaminants.

Set Up the Pipe Scraper:
Select the appropriate pipe scraper for the diameter of your HDPE pipe.
Adjust the scraper according to the manufacturer’s instructions to fit the pipe size and ensure it is set to remove the correct depth of material (usually around 0.2-0.3mm).

Scrape the Pipe:
Place the scraper at the starting point (one of the marked lines) and begin peeling off the outer surface.
Rotate the scraper around the pipe evenly, maintaining consistent pressure. Ensure the entire circumference of the pipe within the marked area is evenly scraped.
Continue scraping until the entire marked length has been peeled to expose a clean, uniform surface.

Inspect the Scraped Area:
Check the scraped area to ensure it is free of any remaining contaminants, oxidation, or scratches.
The surface should be smooth and shiny, indicating the oxidized layer has been properly removed.

Cleaning After Scraping:
Wipe the scraped area with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any debris created during the scraping process.

Proceed with Electrofusion Welding:
Wipe the scraped area with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any debris created during the scraping process.

Proceed with Electrofusion Welding:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fitting and welding the pipe using the electrofusion method.

Additional Tips:

Consistency: Ensure the scraping is consistent around the entire circumference of the pipe to prevent any weak spots in the weld.
Tool Maintenance: Keep your scraping tools clean and sharp to ensure effective and efficient removal of the pipe surface.
Environment: Perform the scraping in a clean environment to prevent recontamination of the pipe surface.
By following these steps, you can ensure that the HDPE pipe is properly prepared for electrofusion welding, leading to a strong and reliable joint.
